The Car I Didn't Buy

For two years, I could afford the car I wanted.

For two years, I chose not to buy it.

Last summer at a cookout, a friend pulled up in a brand-new SUV, freshly detailed, temporary tags still visible. A few of us walked over to check it out. I sat in the driver's seat, smelled the new leather, tested the luxury features, and thought, "As soon as I get home, I'm looking at dealerships”.

Then the conversation shifted.

The monthly payment was more than I'd ever personally be comfortable paying. The loan had been stretched to seven years just to make the monthly payment work. Their spouse didn't even know the full amount of the car yet.

The car looked like success. The numbers looked like sacrifice.

That night, I closed every tab that I had opened. The numbers just didn't make sense for me.

Not because I couldn't afford it – I could. But somewhere along the way, I'd stopped asking, 

"Can I afford this?" and started asking a better question:

"Does this move me closer to the life I'm building or just the image I want to portray?"

So, I waited. Even on the days it felt like everyone else was moving ahead. And when I finally bought my new car this year, the best part wasn't getting the car. The best part was knowing I didn't rush into it.

I made the decision with confidence, not emotion.

We live in a world that constantly tells us to upgrade our lifestyle. But not every upgrade is progress.

Sometimes the smartest financial decision isn't buying something the moment you can afford it.

Sometimes it's having the patience to wait until the purchase aligns with your goals, your priorities, and the life you're intentionally building.

Financial confidence isn't about appearing successful. It's about making decisions you never have to second-guess.

Whatever your version of the car is... maybe it's a vacation. A designer purse. A house. A wedding. Expensive dinners. A business purchase.

Whatever it is, I hope you wait until it fits the life you're building and not just the image you want to portray.
