My Kids Think I'm Being Cheap. I Think I'm Teaching Them Something They'll Thank Me For Later.

My son looked me straight in the face and said, "But we have the money."

We were at the store. He wanted something that wasn't on the shopping list. Keep in mind we created the shopping list together before leaving the house. I said not today. And that's when he hit me with it – the line every parent knows.

"But we HAVE the money."

I almost laughed. Because y'all... that's exactly how we think as adults too.

If I got it, I should spend it, right?

Wrong. Having the money and being able to afford something are two completely different things. One is a number in your account. The other is a decision about what actually matters.

Now, I didn't just say no and walk away. We talked. Right there in the aisle.

We talked about priorities. About the bigger things we're saving for. About how every single dollar needs a job before it leaves your hand.

Now, will he remember this exact conversation next week? Probably not.

But this is what I know – these moments add up. One day, in some store, at some register, he's going to pause before an impulse buy. He's going to think save first, not spend first. At least, I hope.

And that pause? That's the whole game.

I'm not raising perfect kids. I'm raising future adults who won't spend their 30s unlearning what nobody ever taught them about money.
